Taken a year to replace Ade, but Chamakh is not all about his head
It is too early to make judgements, but it is not too early to make observations.
From his highlights at Bordeaux, Marouane Chamakh looked so skilled at guiding the ball with his head that you had to wonder whether he was one of those towering strikers who knew how to use their head more than their foot (ex: Kenwyne Jones).
But from what the Moroccan has shown in pre-season, he might not be just about heading the ball well. Thus, it is worth saying that Adebayor has finally been replaced.
And despite your understandable bitterness, you cannot argue otherwise because the Togolese was indeed missed last season.
People simply get the usage of the word ‘missed’ wrong with Ade. See, Adebayor was not missed in terms of his services as a one-time 30-goal scorer, but missed in terms of his attributes as a big striker capable of leading a frontline.
Even so, the Togo man’s absence was felt only because Wenger chose not to replace him like-for-like. The boss framed Vela, a much different sort of striker, as Adebayor’s stand-in after he failed to lure Chamakh from Bordeaux.
And that decision, upon all Wenger’s intelligence, backfired because it left the fragile Van Persie and Bendtner as the only players in the squad capable of playing upfront on their own.
That said, just imagine if Adebayor was at least in the squad to play in place of the injured Van Persie and Bendtner when we faced Chelsea and United at the Emirates last season.
Just imagine how matters could have been different during those capitulations to our closest rivals where we were battered not because they dominated us all over the pitch but because we were sucker-punched.
Sucker-punched because we had no muscle upfront to shrug off Terry and Alex or Wes Brown and Evans to make something out of at least one of the many chances we created through our little passing moves.
In those matches, we were so desperate for anyone powerful enough to play upfront that even big Sol Campbell would have done better in holding the ball up for Fabregas and Nasri more than midget Arshavin could do. Size was just more significant than skill there.
This brings me back to the point that it has taken a year later for Adebayor to be replaced.
And Chamakh – after witnessing his couple of goals in preseason – could actually be the calm, accurate finisher Eduardo once was while also being that tall, strong striker Adebayor’s exit (and Bendtner’s injury woes) left us in need of.
The way he carefully placed the penalty against SC Neusiedl 1919 (when others might have gone with power) and how he coolly side-footed the ball home against Milan showed that Chamakh, apart from being such an expert header of the ball, is also a striker who likes to finish precisely.
That is key because with Arsenal’s style of passing football, his heading ability was not so fitting and in fact, he might not get as many crosses as he received in France because over in north London, we roll the ball on the ground more.
Therefore, when bought, Chamakh had to boast some ability to score with his foot since Arsenal FC – from Henry to pre-injury Eduardo – is the home of sharp finishers and not necessarily lanky frontmen.
And after observing how he prefers to strike the ball with accuracy, we might not just have the capable ball-header we need in Chamakh, but the cool finisher we also like to see.
Oh, and not even mentioned is how he occassionally does the work of a midfielder in assisting others to attack.
Ya u r right mate.I m already becoming a fan of him and infact i m having him in one of my fantasy football teams in espn
Fans love new signings 🙂
It’s still way too early to make reasonable judgements. I still remember at this stage of the season how most were writing off RVP’s chances of playing the front man in a 433.
That’s what I said in the first sentence mate.
Judgement = “Chamakh’s so good/bad, he will score 20/just 2 goals next season.”
Observation = “Chamakh likes to finish coolly when he gets a pass.”
I’m sure you know which of the two the article above was about. 🙂
Chamakh is a good player but a terrible finisher, so don’t get your hopes up with that finish against Milan is all I will say on him.
RVP more than replaced Ade as the CF, but he got injured. We were much better with Robin as the lone CF because he’s intelligent and because of it we created more chances. Ade had an awful touch, awful finishing as well, but he was good in the air. Chamakh is the best header of the ball since Fernando Morientes so if Sagna and CLichy can work on those crossed, he’ll give defenders a very tough time
Ade had abysmal goals returns before he came to Arsenal. Calling him a shit finisher is crass and patently bollocks.
i like this lad expcting 20 goals this season and 30 the next… not judging him by wat he has done so far but by his style of play and pace and vision of the game…finally we have a striker u can send a through ball to…bendtner can go back 2 carling cup duties now
lol…..ade is a player who never needed replacing mate..hahahahaha thts comedy to sort out a sunday evening aint it..pure gold. Muffin time.
Quality!
Good article.
Early days for Chamkh, but I can’t see any reason why he won’t be the biz – he isn’t just good in the air – he enjoys winning headers & scoring with them. He’s quick, intelligent & looks hungary.
Question is how is he going to get in the team, can’t see RVP/Cesc/Arshavin/Nasri & Chamkh all playing.
Hopefully now we’ll see as little of Bendter as possible. He just doesn’t look like he gives a f**K. You’d think when he returned to the team with RVP still out that he’d have been trying his heart out. Instead he just strutted around as if being the No1 striker wasn’t something to strive for but was owed to him. His finishing made Ade look clincal!
Go on Cham – when RVP gets injured you’re our man!
Bendtner didn’t put his heart into it, is that why he had shown misery after missing his shots? he’s young you twat, just like Walcott, just like Vela, etc. Just because Fabregas matured early doesn’t mean every player will, maybe you guys should listen to Arsene for once? Obviously Chamakh is much better than Bendtner, but he does show heart, he will still get games.
Good observations. It will be interesting to see how AW fits all of our CF into the 4-3-3 system, with Chamakh, VP and Bendtner all craving to lead the line. It may even make some sense to switch to 4-4-2 in some matches, with one big guy leading the charge and Vela act as the 2nd striker.
get off nicky’s back he scored a lot of assists wit tru balls last season.
haha nice on on FAZIZOU
Good article, Randy!
I think, Cham is the real deal, and can be a big threat paired up with RVP! I see a lot of goals this season. Now, only if we can get our defense situation sorted out we will be golden!
If he scores with his head or leg a goal is a goal let him just score it
The Man City player was on the pitch when Utd walked all over us in the CL semi final, and when Chelsea came to our place and did the same thing a few weeks later.
You’re talking out of your arse.
Well i don’t see why they couldn’t all play together. In a 4231 the front 4 are always interchanging anyway.
— Chamack —
Arshavin – Fabregas – v.Persie
—– Nasri — Song —-
It’s super attacking so would only be used when required but v.Persie likes to get stuck in as does Chamack, and they’d swap well as Chamack looks to have the technical ability to play inside forward. The question is whether either can be disciplined enough to track back. Arshavin and Cesc don’t that much so it’s a team thing also.
I would hope for 15 goals and 5-10 assists..that will do..or even reverse, 10 goals and 10-15 assists will do..He could be one of those guys who score in important matches, like Pires used to do for us and Ljunberg did for us in 2003-2004 season.
His goal ratio is not good for ex club ..
He is good in the air.
And if arsene goes back to 4-4-2 ..with cham and van upfront, i think he’ll score more than 20 ..cos van persie score and sets up ..
GO ARSENAL!
its not true that Arsenal doesn’t cross the ball. Just look at how many crosses Theo and Clichy put in during the Emirates cup. Its just that they either get blocked, or sail way over to the opposite corner flag.
It not for a lack of trying, but more for a lack of skills in execution.
We need to loan Beckham to be a “crossing coach”
You do not need Beckham, but need to buy the right people. See how Nani and Valenci cross for Rooney. People though he was magic with his head but people were putting the ball right at his head. We need when people are crossing they have to have an aim whether it is the head of their target man and his leg. see how rosisky crossed for welshere to shot that deadly shot.
Good assessment, I also liked his control. The only sorry I have for him is, he will not be getting those crosses he used to get and bury goals with.
the way you wrote it, he sounds like TH14..
Was the great TH14 an ‘expert ball-header’? Tell me please.
How many times do I have to make it clear that no one is judging Chamakh but only observing and learning about his attributes instead?
Go ahead and expect him to walk on water next season if you want.
Reality check. Latest odds on the Premiership winners for 2010/11 ; Chelsea 6/4, Manchester Utd. 5/2, Manchester City 11/2, Arsenal 7/1.
To all those Wenger devotees who think this will be OUR season – well the bookies beg to differ. While 7/1 suggests we’ll do o.k. ( top 4 again ?),they don’t think we’ve got what it takes to WIN IT.The bookies are not often wrong.
If you think differently, have a wager. At 7/1, on the fourth line of betting – good luck !
“In Arsene we rust”.
