Arsene Wenger has admitted that he has probably lost one of his key players to an injury for the rest of this season.

Arsenal are aiming to rescue their campaign with less than three months remaining after recent setbacks in the two major competitions.

The absence of important players have played its part in the Gunners’ below-par form and Santi Cazorla is a man sorely missed.

According to Wenger, the Spaniard does not appear to be on course for a return before this season comes to an end.

“It is very frustrating for us because, at the start of the season, he was maybe the star of the team,” the Arsenal manager said

“Overall it is a big loss for us but I am especially sad for him. For a guy who loves football, when football is so natural, he suffers a lot not to be on the pitch.

“I am not specialised enough [to know if he’s out for the season]. It’s a special problem on his calf.

“At the moment, the only thing I can say because I have not seen him in training, not even in fitness work, is that he’ll be short [to return this season].”
