Thanks Arsene, out of title race before it even started…
By David Swadden
Oh, to be a gooner. A freak game but Wenger has made his own luck. “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs”… oh screw it.
Angry, cheated, misled, let down, worried, frustrated – all feelings many Arsenal fans would have used to describe themselves before a ball was even kicked yesterday. So with a first game of the season with enough talking points to last until the end of the campaign, it’s a pretty lively time to be an Arsenal fan to say the least.
Let’s put some truths on the table about Arsenal vs Aston Villa 2013. The referee did indeed have a shocker. The amount of injuries was also dreadfully unlucky and Chez was unlucky to not save the first penalty. Arsenal started fast and I remember discussing with friends early on that the crowd’s mood would be hugely dependent on the result, far more so than usual. Ask most of our fans, and I would exepct the majority would tell you we have a useful starting 11 when all are fit, capable of challenging for the top four but lacking a couple of game-changers to take us to the next level. But once the game turned, so did the crowd.
Now some may call that fickle, after all, where were the chants of “spend some f**king money” when all was going rosily? The answer – you make your own luck and much of Arsenal’s undoing was bad luck brought on precisely because of the state the squad is in. The two were very closely related.
Let’s look at Villa’s first goal for example. Agbonglahor waltzed past three players before being brought down. A dodgy decision ultimately you may say, as advantage was given and squandered. However, the important point is that a real defensive midfielder, a tough enforcer, would have been on hand to snuff out that kind of run and protect the back four. Other issues in a defensively frail performance was the form of Bacary Sagna, who looks to be the player of earlier this year, rather than seasons’ past. The very fact that Wenger is starting to talk about Sagna as a centre-back suggests he believes the Frenchman is starting to wane as a full-back. So where is his replacement/cover aside from the raw Jenkinson?
Another big talking point was the introduction of Santi Cazorla. Don’t get me wrong, the little Spaniard is one of our best players and evidence of what you get if you actually pay decent money. But he clearly wasn’t fit to play a major role and it was his two tired touches that led firstly to the penalty that wasn’t, and then to Koscielny’s second yellow. The Ox’s injury was unfortunate, but it was the thin nature of the squad that ultimately meant an unfit player had to be introduced.
And, despite an early goal, I remain to be convinced that Giroud has anywhere near the qualifications needed to be our lone front man. It was as though he felt that the early tap-in was enough contribution from him and preceded to then squander chances and display pretty unsubtle technique and touch where it mattered.
So when the furious cries calling Wenger to spend came, I couldn’t help myself. Here was an opportunity to show a stubborn manager, seemingly immune to accountability from his bosses, just how let down and angry we, the fans, who were here before him and will be there long after he leaves, felt. Most Arsenal fans have been enormously patient with the club but it does feel like we are at a crossroads now. I have never known such fan discontent and have never found it so difficult to provide a moderating argument.
Present day Arsenal and Arsene are as interconnected as their respective names suggest. Wenger prides himself as a purist and a visionary, and he has built a club around that vision, where he appears less manager, more supreme spiritual leader. For years it worked perfectly, but now it seems to be very slowly caving in on itself. A big question is – has Wenger’s approach ever changed from the all-conquering turn of the century squads or has football changed around him? I suspect the latter. The gems are becoming easier to find and other teams have taken heed of our approach and provide far stronger competition for the present-day Ljungbergs and Pireses have seen us instead pick up the Gervinhos and Arshavins.
And what we now see is a rigid Wenger, either unable or unwilling to change, desperately defending his strategy with any excuse he can find rather than admitting it may be out of date. This week, for example, Wenger even suggested that Gervinho simply suffered from a lack of confidence, and seemed to blame the fans for his short and sub-par Arsenal career, remarkable.
I must admit, before yesterday’s game, I had been willing to hold judgment on Wenger’s summer until the end of the transfer window and took the immediate doom and gloom with a pinch of salt, remembering our stunning end to last season. But unlike the manager, I’ll admit I was wrong.
It’s not that my faith in the current team as a decent starting XI has not wavered. If injuries didn’t exist and every decision was just, I wouldn’t be worried. But that just isn’t football. Yesterday made me see how little margin for error and misfortune Wenger has allowed for, and that is a decision that is naïve at best and downright arrogant and negligent at worst. And of course, what makes fans so angry is there is just no need. We have no selling saga to deal with, we have money in the bank and a large chunk of the wage bill and squad list shorn.
Probably best to finish up now, as there are so many issues at play that I could go on for hours, we haven’t even address the fact that, when Sagna got injured at the end, the bench was in such disarray that a substitute was, for quite a long time, nowhere to be found! There’s two issues at play on Arsenal’s lack of transfer activity. Firstly, we of course lack the amount star quality that we have missed since the departures of Nasri, Fabregas and Van Persie. But more glaringly obviously yesterday, we missed simple squad depth which was so exposed. Fate can be a cruel mistress and karma a bitch, but my goodness this summer has been tempting both.
It’s extraordinary that despite failing to qualify for the champions league, looming stadium debt and facing the departure of one of their best players for generations, it is Tottenham fans who have far more cause for optimism over their clubs fortunes at the moment.
Your move Arsene, and it better be a bloody bold one.

hear hear!
I’m with you pal. This is absolute arrogance on the part of Wenger and the entire board of Arsenal. Wenger is spoiling the game of football not only for Arsenal fans but the majority of the football loving fans. Disillusion is the word for a man who thinks changes in soccer administration revolves around only himself. Wenger should learn humility from sir Alex Fergusen who despite been an authority on his own, followed these changed as they evolved.
the refs should do their jobs end of! No one should take the blame for a ref not doing his job. the fact that on another day Walcott would take his chances and that phantom pen wouldn’t have been given puts things in perspective,
I for one believe there are signings in the horizon and the primary ones are not willing to sign except we qualify for CL proper.- this will then determine if we go for the plan B ones. Even if the Suarez deal has been sorted out, he would be out for 6 months but he is a player worth taking such a risk for cos neither one loss nor one win means the end of anyone’s season. bottom line for example is that Aston villa are not going to win the PL or even finish 3nd or 3rd as is their current position.
I am thinking the signing of Poldi, and Giroud earlier last season was easier because we finished 3rd in the season before last. These are small but vital details that people like to gloss over.
We must still wait to judge transfers at the end of the transfer window, its not AWs fault that the season starts before the window ends – I think this also has its pros and cons.
You can only beat what is in front of you but lets wait till our rivals play Aston villa and we play hull and co before we can better see where this loss leaves us and it is certainly not out of the title race.
Suarez is out for 6 game’s…. not 6 months you doughnut!
And the rest of your comment is a load of you know what!
People like you don’t even deserve to write or comment on any topic involving Arsenal coz you have no brain.I believe you did not even watch the match against Aston Villa. That Arsenal team lack everything,no creativity,no sharp and intelligent man at the front, no midfield enforcer,no central defender, no good keeper,no team coordination and u said we should wait till our rivalries play Aston Villa before we judge wenger or Arsenal then your a fool.
yes jump on what was obvious;y a typo and also go and force players like Gustavo that do not want to leave Germany to do so cos you are superman. He probably feared for his chances but its a risk a player has to take to go and fight for his shirt and not be given assurances on first team places regardless of form.
we don’t even know all the reasons Huguain went to Napoli instead… the whole point is that signings did not cost us the game. Not taking our chances and a great help for villa from the ref combined to do so
What makes you think that wenger can turn it around
with only 2 weeks left in the transfer market?
Why did gazidis come out with all that bullsh#t?
If there really was a big war chest to spend…
Why would you tell the world?
So that every club would up their valuation on a player that we showed interest in.
As for so called targets… (Whilst trying to look good as if they tried)
All our bids were deliberately well under the asking price…
So when Gazidis made them comments about we have money to spend…
He was really out selling season tickets… that day.
Would you have renewed yours if you knew what was coming?
are the negotiations for players starting right now? Are they not already in going? be very sure that as soon as the ties for CL qualification proper are over you will hear signings being announced. Its not exactly rocket science…. just that you guys love to moan. Loss of the 1st game of the season has never stopped anyone from winning the league just as the several years in the past that we won our opening game did not get us the PL wither!
Wenger is and has been a liar and a below par manager for some time.
I would have sacked him 5 years ago.
Title and Arsenal cannot be mentioned in the same sentence these days. Wenger refused to go with dignity now he will go a tarnished figure. We are in trouble because of structural problems, scouting, upper management, it’s a mess. This will now be his legacy, it’s a shame.
I am so pissed off having trouble sleeping. The anger level could be pretty poisonous by Saturday afternoon. By Saturday night there could be mob with torches and pitchforks on the rampage in north London.
Wenger doesnt care about his team being solid or having at least one DM to snuff out situations like this. NO Arteta who isnt even a natural DM but the best we got. Coquelin on loan & Frimpong (only other real option on the bench). Chelsea who played at home today had 2 defense minded midfielders on the pitch, We had none! Also Podolski should have been introduced instead of Santi. He is a more direct & powerful player, a Germany international with loads of caps & wenger ignores him. We already had Jack & Rosicky, Santi offered little difference in style.
I agree with you. Wenger seems to want this total football style aka Barca where every player is offensive minded and has offensive abilities. Thus we don’t have a specialist DM and are trying to convert Ramsey and making Arteta play the role. I remember how excited I was to have The offensive goal scoring Arteta that was at Everton someone who could be our Frank Lampard then Wenger sticks him in DM. He is older, diverse, more mature and willing to sacrifice to do the job and does a good job at it. But when he doesn’t play we are in big trouble. Wilshire has the number 10 on his back and cannot fulfill it because of no specialist DM. I believe in specialist DM, it doesn’t seem like Wenger does and we are suffering as a result.
I am willing to wait and see but it does not look good from my vantage point. The way I see it because of our previous years folly big players are not attracted to sign for us. Why would they? Our pay structure had RVP making about the same as Arshavin, no top player wants to carry a team and be making the same as the reserves and nowhere near what other world stars are making, we sell our best players at the drop of a dime, we haven’t won or shown the will to win for a very long time, the squad is bare and good players know you need quality depth to compete, we are not yet in the Champions League, we are not competitive to win it anyway. These are not selling points for the world’s elite. Our transfer record remains around 16 million pounds despite all the big talk, good players are spouses to have faith that this spending habits will change and this is something they want to be a part of????? Come on let’s get real about this, what elite player would say “I want to sign up for that!” That’s how the real world is working against us now……
**supposed (not spouses) Damn auto correct!!! Lol
LOL…
And damm the F#CKER who’s responsible
For the shenanigans at the Emirates…
Arsene simply thinks all of are fools. He is the only man who does the same things over the years and expect a different result. His excuses after the several blunders are more pathetic.
Have you considered the reason he hasn’t spent any money, is they are keeping it for the next manager, Wenger was on his arse in the dugout for most of the match, he never adopts that position for too long, he is up waving his arms, kicking water bottles, arguing with 4th official, Arsenal are getting beaten, Lambert is up and about talking to his players, Wenger is on his arse doing nothing because not only has he lost the plot he has lost interest, he can’t take them any further, no new contract, he is on his way….GOOD NEWS AT LAST
Oh how the tables have turned
