Arsene Wenger has made a new statement regarding the much-anticipated deal for his top scorer from last season.

The Gunners failed to finish in the top four of the Premier League last term but it was certainly a season to remember for star forward Alexis Sanchez.

However, after refusing to extend his contract at the club, the Chile international who managed to score 30 goals in all competitions in the 2016/17 campaign, has been rumoured to be on the verge of a departure.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the former Barcelona star’s main suitors at the moment.

And to fuel those rumours of an exit, Wenger has now admitted that the club has not made any progress in agreeing a new deal with Sanchez.

“He (Sanchez) is a player who goes into the final year of his contract. We have not progressed on that front,” the Arsenal manager said

However, Wenger insists he will not give up on trying to reach an agreement with the 28-year-old over extending his contract.

“Let’s not be wrong, it’s not an ideal situation on the financial side and it demands some sacrifice.” he added

“But first of all it doesn’t mean the players who are in the final year of their contract will not extend their contract.

“You have still that possibility and we work on that as well.”
