Arsene Wenger has spoken on rumours suggesting that the club could announce the signing of a new player before Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.

Arsenal are preparing to welcome Jurgen Klopp’s rejuvenated side to the Emirates stadium having signed only one guaranteed first team player in Granit Xhaka so far this summer.

With injuries to Danny Welbeck, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista already troubling his side, Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a deal for a new striker and centre-back.

However, the Frenchman has played down gossip claiming Valencia star Shkodran Mustafi is set to be announced as the Gunners’ latest signing this weekend.

“Look, today my focus is not too much on that [Mustafi transfer], because we play a very important game in 48 hours. Transfers will not help us now to do well in this game because we have a strong squad. We have to deal with the game on Sunday with the squad we have available.” he said

“But of course we lost basically three centre backs, because we have [lost] Mertesacker and Gabriel and Koscielny, who is not ready. Most of the time, the injuries happen in the same sector. But I believe we are equipped to do well and I’m confident we can do well. Transfer-wise, as soon as we do something, we will inform you.”

EDITOR’S OPINION

Wenger is notorious for being coy on speculation about players who are about to sign for/leave the club. The man is no Harry Redknapp when it comes to updates on deals. You will never find him giving away details of a transfer at a pre-conference or from a car window.

He is the same person who once claimed in 2011 that Samir Nasri would “definitely” be staying at Arsenal even though the midfielder was completing his medical in Manchester at the time. With the club known for ‘undisclosed fee on a long-term contract’, Arsenal and Wenger are arguably the most secretive when it comes to deals.
