Arsene Wenger has revealed the reasons behind his late substitutions during Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Dinamo Zagreb.
The Gunners kept their campaign in Europe alive as goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez secured a 3-0 win against the same Croatian outfit they had lost to in September.
With the third goal coming over 20 minutes before the final whistle, Arsene Wenger had the luxury of resting some of his key players after Arsenal’s recent injuries woes.
However, the Frenchman opted to keep his two goalscorers on the pitch as Olivier Giroud and Hector Bellerin were withdrawn instead.
According to Wenger, the Spanish right-back’s return from injury made him more of a fitness priority than the energetic Sanchez.
“I took Bellerin off because he had a groin problem just before, so I could not take Alexis off. We now have 5 days to recover anyway” he said.
“Giroud had a little problem on his ankle over the weekend. I tried to compromise a bit, rest him a bit & give a breather to Giroud”
Theo Walcott, Mikel Arteta and Francis Coquelin are all on the injury list while Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck, and Tomas Rosicky are yet to make an appearance this season.
