Speculation has grown over the past 24 hours that Arsenal have made a move for Fulham’s young English center-back.

Hinting of the transfer is the relatively credible Sky Sports who report that the Gunners have made a £7 million bid for the 20-year-old.

Smalling has impressed for Fulham during absences of former Arsenal target Brede Hangeland and would be seen as a long-term replacement for 32-year-old William Gallas whose contract expires this summer.

Wenger was expected to break the silence on Wednesday’s main gossip after the clash with Bolton and the Frenchman might have done so in promising fashion for those familiar with the manager’s tone when a transfer rumor is likely.

Arsene gave a shy response and maintained that the club intends to keep all transfer movements behind closed doors.

“We like to keep quiet about what we do.” Wenger said.

“When we sign a player, we will inform the press but I believe it is very important that between the clubs nothing comes out – from our side nor from Fulham’s side or from any other club.”
