Wenger surprised by defender’s emergence
Quite honestly, Arsene Wenger did not expect Thomas Vermaelen to settle in at Arsenal so handily.
The Belgian thoroughly impressed in his first games in the red and white and added more to the delight by scoring on his debut.
Vermaelen looked reliable at Goodison Park and further displayed his essential understanding with William Gallas at the heart of Arsenal’s defense in a tougher match at Celtic on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old has also provided the aerial ability Arsenal previously lacked at the back and with Vermaelen gradually growing into an answer to the Gunners’ defensive problems, Wenger could not help but express his satisfaction.
“Yes I am surprised. He had a very long preparation and we saw he had the physical strength and the mentality to cope with it. When it’s needed he comes in.
I believe he has a good mixture of physical, technical and it’s interesting to have a left-footed player because it gives you angles for the pass that are very important to the midfielders.” Wenger said.
(I need to let you all know that the site may not be updated for a week or so due to a personal obligation.
So don’t worry where I’ve gone during that time, this has never happened before but I hope you all manage well without me this weekend against Pompey. )
Vermaelen has given the team added steel at the back. He is the player Arsenal have been looking for to shore the defense. He could be in the making of a legend just like Franco Beresi of AC Milan during the 70’s. Credit to Wenger for buying him.
Verm, is the man! He is really focused and knows his job really well. Gallas/Verm. a great combo!!!
It’s funny how Verm. was never mentioned before he came to Arsenal. The Boss makes these players stars!
once again Wegner finds a diamond in the rough. Him and Gallas play well off each other. Wonder what would happen if we end up getting Hangland too? Those two in the middle would be unstoppable but might be a slap in the face to Gallas. I say just keep DJ and Senderous in case of emergency and if all else fails sing Hangland at the Jan window.
thank you USA Gunner..for giving praises where it really is due…Arsene the great!
Wenger did received a lot of criticism when he first bought Vermaelen because many fans had expected him to purchase a ‘known’ centre- back. I am glad thus far Verma has repaid Wenger’s faith in him. Hope that he will continue to perform well consistently.
….well so far vern has done well, but its still too early to judge…he is yet to face the true test of time…i hope the likes of Kolo Toure realise the importance of good concentration…up gunners!
things have to look good if your Arsen, and I bet a lot of teams and managers are starting to get a little worried about Arsenal. I think a lot of people knew that this team would be the team to beat in the future and the future is now. Two big away wins on harsh pitches/crowds sounds good to me. Take Pompey at home with a big win sending another message and go into the Celtic and Man U weekend on a high.
Anyone else anxious and excited for this team?
Fantastic buy, but what happened to Song? He seems to have become the defensive DM we have been crying out for!
What a surprise, AW was right all along! 🙂
I am certain there WILL be a few scares along the way, but i am very excited about just what this team might achieve even THIS year!
great manager,great team
wow i cant believe the stuff im reading last season and before this season started everybody was disrespecting the boss arsene wenger now he has turned it all around im so happy for alex song believe me! denilson too and vermaelen is straight class the tackle at celtic park when he ran from celtics box back to our box and intercepted brown right before brown was going to volley it, the defence looks great i still think we need a player maybe an attacking player and start our consistent run alive if we beat portsmouth and celtic the next games confidence will be very high and especially that man united aint looking like the same team they were last year, so lets start of by beating portsmouth saturday hopefully…..
