Wenger: Why I didn’t want Perez to start games

Arsene Wenger has explained his decision to hand Lucas Perez only one start for the Gunners before the League Cup clash with Nottingham Forest.

The Spaniard, who joined from Deportivo La Coruna during the summer transfer window, was yet to complete 90 minutes of action for his new club until Tuesday’s fixture which saw him score his first two goals for Arsenal.

According to Wenger, the new signing cannot be rushed into action as he adapts to football on English soil.

“When you see the games, you can see the intensity is total and it takes you a little while sometimes to adjust to that,” Wenger told Arsenal Player

“All the players that we bought this season have top quality and have the right attitude.”

With a Premier League showdown against Chelsea coming up on Sunday, the impact of Perez could be needed as Olivier Giroud struggles to stay fit.

“I believe that in training Lucas shows the quality to integrate into our squad and this is a job where you have to be focused and maintain your desire no matter what happens to you.” the Arsenal manager added

“Sometimes it comes quick, sometimes you have to wait and at the moment he shows us the quality.

“If he maintains that he will get his chance.”
