You don’t often see this at Arsenal
For once, a big name signing by Arsenal.
Yes, Jose Antonino Reyes and Andrey Arshavin may argue that statement but neither were as accomplished – 43 goals in 95 international appearances – and more promising – at 26 years old – as Lukas Podolski when they arrived in north London.
We have come to expect astute and ‘out-of-the-blue’ signings from Arsene Wenger over the years involving players whom we have never heard of until they were linked to the club. But this is not one of them. Podolski is is no Laurent Koscielny or Eduardo da Silva. His name will not leave you guessing or researching for too long because he is indeed one of the household names of football.
The Polish-born striker has been under the spotlight since he was 18 when he earned a call-up to Euro 2004 after a fantastic debut season with home club Cologne, scoring 10 goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances in the 2003/04 season. His career saw its lagging phase at Bayern Munich but he remained a star figure on the international stage for Germany where he beat Cristiano Ronaldo to the FIFA Young Player of the World Cup award in 2006. And four years later, he impressed again at the 2010 World Cup where England witnessed him score against them in Germany’s 4-1 win.

And to top all that off, Podolski showed up in this campaign with his best ever season in the Bundesliga, netting 18 times for FC Cologne thus far. That may be what has effectively attracted Arsenal to his signature but Lukas is not just about recent exploits. He has been around for a while. We know him and we know he is good. Arsene Wenger won’t have to tell us this time.
Of course, a player is judged only after he has performed on the pitch, and therefore, only time will tell whether Lukas Podolski will excel at Arsenal. His ability to adapt to Arsene Wenger’s tactics and keep up with the demands of Premier League football are all factors to consider, but there is no doubt that Lukas Podolski is a player who has what it takes.

Lu Lu Lu Lukas PODOLSKI
Just glad this has finally been confirmed
I luv podolski e is the player i ever want in Arsenal
I always trust AW whenever he actually signs player, known or unknown.
Wilsheres’ update on twitter: “podolski…….great signing! top player! To have that many appearances for Germany you have to be half decent!.”……………i couldn’t agree more.
See I told every1 on this blog months ago about this deal being done as I had inside information on the matter the deal has actually been done for about 4months now and arsenal first started scouting him in august last year!!!!! I have also been told by the same source that contact has been made over yann m’villa however arsenals first estimation has been knocked back…
mate, tbh this one has been obvious for months… everyone knew it was coming. Even Wenger didn’t do his usual denial in press conferences when it was first brought up.
A future teller, you are not.
Now sort out the defense and midfield Wenger – Vontonghen n M Villa then some more class!
Come on Le Boss!
….yes and Eden Hazard too. That will do for me.
Just to be sure, you weren’t having a dig at Koscielny right?
Not at all. I was just using him as an example of the several players who came to the club as ‘unknowns’….I’m sure you said “Laurent who?’ when you heard of Koscielny for the first time.
This is a good move by wenger I think next season we are going to see some thing different in Arsenal team UP GUNNERS!!
Season ticket sales must be slow for us to announce his signing this early! Expect RVP to be sold late August! If we buy MVilla, Song will be sold ( which won’t be a bad thing with Coq waiting to prove he’s far the better player). This board will not spend money. A profit always has to be made! Wenger should make a stand or move on. Taking £7mil a year to make board ever more wealthy is just ripping off fans!!
A great player & eager to score goal at all time.i love podolski
Do we need m’villa? Because we have Song, Wishere, Arteta, coquelin, frimpong, and Diaby(when he’s fit) who can play as Defensive midfielders.Instead we need a worldclass playmaker. The only player at Arsenal capable of playing that role at present is rosicky.
maybde Poldi will play there…
Everyones assuming hes there to play instead of RVP or over on the left, but maybe… just maybe he’ll be our new no.10 (position, not physical number).
Think
Cracking Long shot – check
Eye for a pass – check
is mobile – check
Like to get stuck in so won’t shirk the defensive work – (apparently) check.
Yes we need to offload Song and bring in M’Vila as the first teamer with Le Coque as back up also sign Vertonghen and Eriksson and well be in top shape
Wow, this is finally official! Welcome Poldoski! I think this is the very the first time Wenger signed a 26 year old experienced international player for the next season before the season even ends. There are currently strong rumours about M’Villa and Vertonghen joining us. I really hope Wenger signs them before the season end so that RVP will see this as Wenger’s intent to challenge for the EPL crown next season and sign the new contract.
We seriously need a pure denfensive midfielder. Song’s positioning is a suspect, Diaby is always injured and Coquelin is still unproven at the highest level. We have already shipped in 44 goals this season – the worse ever under Wenger’s regime. We really need to sign M’Villa and Vertonghen to strengthen our defence. Vertonghen is very versatile and can play at central defence, left back or even as a defensive midfielder. No more Djourou, Squillaci please.
i am Koln fan. Podolski is fighter and leader as well as being best player. That guy never gives up
Sure bodoski is a super striker nd im sure he we adapt to arsenal partern nd we also giv the club a gud result.
