Contrary to recent reports, Laurent Koscielny will not be undergoing surgery.

The defender is having a stop-start season due to injuries and French reports recently suggested that Koscielny could be set to go under the knife.

An achilles injury had been Koscielny’s chronic problem this campaign but he managed to return to action two weeks ago, only to be sent back to the sidelines through a calf problem.

There have been fears over the 29-year-old suffering a similar fate to former Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen who is yet to make his debut for Barcelona after relentless injury troubles ever since he had an operation on his achilles heel in 2011.

But Arsene Wenger has now quashed rumours about Koscielny suffering a similar fate to Vermaelen and the Gunners’ boss insists that his centre-back is on his way back.

Koscielny will not be fit to face Liverpool on Sunday, but his manager sounded upbeat on Thursday.

“Koscielny is out (for the game on Sunday). But he is progressing as planned.” Wenger said
