The duo have spent much of the season on the sidelines but have now received positive news over their fitness.

Diaby, perpetually injured, has been limited to an astonishing three appearances all season – all as a substitute – and has even seen his future at the club questioned by frustrated fans.

Santos on the other hand went down to an unlucky ankle injury in December after being risked by Arsene Wenger in a Champions League visit to Olympiakos.

The Brazilian has now recovered from his surgery in January, and was even named on the bench during Monday’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

But the summer signing from Fenerbahce has some warming up towards his fitness to do, and Wednesday night’s participation with the club’s reserves will serve as that, ahead of the trip to Goodison in a week’s time where Abou Diaby – previously feared to have seen an early end to his season after limping off at Anfield – is set to return.

“Diaby is not far [away], Santos I think will play on Wednesday night in the Reserves against West Brom. He will need 90 minutes.” Wenger said.

“Diaby should be back for Everton, he has a little chance. Jack [Wilshere] is less imminent.”
