Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has slammed one of the Gunners’ senior defenders who played in the 2-2 draw against Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

After last season’s woeful finish which saw the Gunners fail to secure a return to the Champions League, there was no question about the fact that the club needed to reinvest in the squad during the summer.

That saw a number of players leave while Unai Emery brought in new names and David Luiz happened to be one of them.

The Brazilian moved to the Emirates stadium from Chelsea as a potentially shrewd signing as the Gunners looked to solve their defensive problems.

However, things have certainly not gone according to plan so far this season with the Arsenal defence continuing to leak more and more goals against all sorts of opponents.

After watching David Luiz’s display on Thursday, Keown has slammed the Brazilian veteran for being part of a worrying ‘illness’ at the club.

“This is almost like an illness within the club,” Keown said on BT Sport, as quoted by Football.London

“The lack of hunger and desire to want to defend. Look how easily they go past two Arsenal defenders there. They’re so naive, I don’t know what David Luiz is doing, other than blocking the goalkeeper.

“That is basically year and year of the emphasis of Arsenal changing, they’re only interested when they have the ball.”

“As a young coach, I wouldn’t have even bothered going to a back three because I wouldn’t have been certain I knew that system well enough, I’d have kept it with a back four, along with most of the same players.

“When you work with me you have to work hard, you’re not staying back at home relaxing, this is part of work ethic’. The Wolves team this season, the number of changes they’ve made this season is minuscule compared to what Arsenal have made.”
