Emery reveals this Arsenal defender could actually play in midfield too
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed that one of his defenders could actually feature in midfield if he is needed to do so in the future.
The Gunners boss is known as a manager who is never afraid to change his team tactics even when it does not appear that any alterations are needed.
Emery had surprisingly opted not to hand Calum Chambers more playing time, despite the Englishman’s solid performance in the opening game of the season against Newcastle.
However, after seeing his squad troubled by more injuries, suspensions and poor form from senior players in recent weeks, Emery has finally chosen to bring Chambers back into the team.
The former Southampton player featured in the big win in the Carabao Cup a couple of days ago and his performance has sent out another message to his manager about the sort of quality he brings to the table.
According to Unai Emery, Chambers is not only meant to play at centre-back or right-back.
Indeed, the Arsenal boss claims the defender can play as a midfielder as well.
“He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right back, centre back, left back like tonight, and we can use him in the midfield also.” the Arsenal boss told the club’s official website after the win over Nottingham Forest
Whether the Arsenal faithful are willing to see Chambers play in midfield is another question, but there is no doubt that the subpar form of Granit Xhaka may have left a void to be filled in that area.
