One more player has been added to the list of prospects who could make their first team berth next season after Chiori Johnson’s new contract.
The highly rated right-back helped Arsenal’s under-18s to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals this season as well as featuring for the under-21s on a number of occasions.
Following the emergence of Hector Bellerin and Alex Iwobi in the past 18 months, Arsene Wenger has been encouraged to hand more opportunities to players from the club’s youth team.
Thus, Chiori Johnson has been rewarded with a new six-year-contract believed to be worth around £3,000-a-week in wages.
The 18-year-old will now be eligible to feature for the club’s first team squad next season with his rare appearances likely to be made in the League Cup.
Johnson was only awarded his first professional contract in January but his impressive form has prompted the club to commit him to a long-term deal as the future of Mathieu Debuchy remains uncertain.
