Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on one of his first team stars to pour cold water on speculation about his uncertain future.

Arsenal won the FA Cup courtesy of a vital assist from substitute Olivier Giroud only moments after Chelsea had equalized.

The Frenchman’s importance to the team has been a subject of debate once again as rumours continue to suggest that he is set for a departure with West Ham eying his services.

However, Wenger has heaped praise on Giroud and played down reports that he is no longer part of his plans by insisting his qualities are still needed at the club.

“It has been a frustrating season for him because he has not played a lot,” Wenger said.

“And when he has played well, he has not always played the next match.

“He has won us a lot of points when he has come on because he has scored lots of times. He has qualities that our team need.”
