Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has urged the Gunners to put together an affordable amount of money to persuade Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to remain at the Emirates stadium.

Ever since he was signed by Arsene Wenger during the winter transfer window in 2018, Aubameyang has proven to be the most important player in the Arsenal squad, leading the team’s scoring tallies over the last two seasons.

Indeed, the exploits of the Gabon international are what kept the Gunners’ within reach of a top four spot despite a horrible start to the 2019/20 campaign which saw Unai Emery get sacked by the club.

But with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2021 and no immediate sign of an extension, there has been speculation over the possibility of Aubameyang leaving north London in the near future.

And since the striker’s situation appears to be similar to that of Robin van Persie who moved to Old Trafford in 2012, former Gunner Bacary Sagna has called for Arsenal to offer around £50m for Aubameyang to stay.

“He can’t go now because Arsenal are on the way to building something strong,” Sagna told Goal.

“They can’t afford to lose him. If they have to pay him, then just pay him because if they want someone else of his quality they cost £150m.

“So don’t spend this £150m, just spend £50m and give it to him. It’s the same as van Persie and I think you have to learn from that situation.

“Auba deserves it. I’m not saying that because of his name or because he has scored a few goals. He’s the best striker in the league.”
