The Russian was an active menace along with Wilshere and captain Rosicky in attack and opened the scoring after just 90 seconds with a dazzling finish before nearly finding a second with a sublime shot which struck the crossbar.

Jay Simpson, surprisingly involved after being reported to be set for an exit, also had an impressive first 45 minutes, finishing off a pair of chances set up by Wilshere.

Despite not having much to do, Arsenal’s back four were also in fine form along with DM, Frimpong.

Traore was a real threat in attack from left back, youngster Nordveit was also solid at right full-back while Vermaelen, who had a shot at goal cleared off the line, helped comfort Koscielny on his debut.

Expected changes for the second-half saw the likes of Mannone, Djourou, Nasri, Walcott and Chamakh all introduced.

Walcott in particular seemed to be in full confidence during the opening minutes of the second-half and only a fine save from the ‘keeper denied him a goal after a superb run and chip.

New signing Marouane Chamakh also showed glimpses of the quality he displayed at Bordeaux, linking up well with Arsenal’s forwards with his back to goal while injury returnees Djourou and Gibbs looked fit enough for the start of the new campaign.

The Gunners spent much of the second-half probing Barnet’s defense to add to their tally and it took until the 74th minute for them to find a goal.

Arsenal’s fourth came courtesy of a gift though, as Nasri took advantage of some slack Barnet defending to find his way into the box and place the ball home past a hapless goalkeeper.
