Report: Leyton Orient 1-1 Arsenal
Arsenal will have to redo the FA Cup fifth round tie against Leyton Orient in order to secure a quarter-final trip to Manchester United after Jonathan Tehoue scored late to cancel out Rosicky’s opener on Sunday.
The hosts’ equalizer was sorely conceded by the Gunners who held full command at Bisbane Road but now face an unwanted replay on March 2 for allowing what was a very avoidable goal.
Wenger made 10 changes from the line-up that beat Barca, with 18-year-old Spanish centre-half Ignasi Miquel making his debut, and Orient were never overawed against the understudies.
It was a bright start by the home side, who had knocked out Championship promotion hopefuls Norwich and then Swansea in the last rounds, as skipper Stephen Dawson tested Almunia with a low drive from 20 yards.
Arsenal, though, soon settled and Marouane Chamakh glanced a header goalwards after good work down the left from Kieran Gibbs and Andrey Arshavin, who came off the bench to net the winner against Barcelona.
Orient, cheered on by a capacity 9,000 crowd, were not overawed and tried to take the game to their illustrious opponents.
On 14 minutes, Gibbs fed Chamakh at the edge of the penalty area, but the Moroccan – whose last of his 11 goals came in November – could only hit a tame sidefoot effort which Jamie Jones saved comfortably, At the other end, Charlie Daniels sent a 25-yard effort just over following a corner.
Arsenal, though, were soon back on the offensive, as Jones kept out Arshavin’s low drive.
Andrew Whing pushed Rosicky over to concede a free-kick just outside the Orient box on the left flank. Arshavin’s delivery, though, was headed clear.
Bendtner was the next Arsenal player off target, scuffing his half-volley wide from 18 yards.
Orient continued to close down Arsenal as the visitors struggled to open up the home side in the final third.
As the break approached, Chamakh stabbed wide as he stretched to get on the end of Gibbs’ low centre across the six-yard box.
Arshavin weaved into the right side of the Orient penalty area, but could only find the side-netting.
Orient made a change for the second half as injured defender Jason Crowe was replaced by Thomas Carroll.
With an already congested fixture list, which includes next Sunday’s Carling Cup final against Birmingham at Wembley, the last thing Wenger will have wanted was a replay, and Arsenal started with more urgency.
However, once more Orient defended in numbers, denying the Gunners any time on the ball.
Arsenal finally took the lead on 53 minutes.
Bendtner’s persistence in the right side of the penalty area paid off when his cutback was glanced into the far corner by Rosicky – his first goal since January 2010.
Orient could have let their heads drop, but immediately went on the offensive as Alex Revell looped a header goalwards.
Arsenal, though, continued to look threatening on the break, with Arshavin’s turn and run almost playing in Rosicky.
On 68 minutes, the Czech midfielder was denied a second goal by a brilliant reaction save at the near post from Jones, who also blocked the rebound.
Tehoue injected some pace into the Orient attack and the French forward broke quickly down the right, as Revell swept a first-time effort wide from the edge of the Arsenal box.
Orient knew time was running out so pressed forwards, but in doing so left themselves open on the counter-attack.
Tehoue broke down the right again and crossed to the centre where Revell fired in his shot – only for the much-maligned Sebastien Squillaci to somehow make a saving block as the hosts shouted for handball. A subsequent glance at the Frenchman’s buffeted face revealed the truth.
Arshavin almost made the tie safe when he dashed clear down the left, but his shot flew across goal and clipped the far post.
Orient, though, were not to be denied a famous visit to the Emirates Stadium in a replay as Tehoue capitalized on slip-ups from Gibbs and Miguel to drill home a shot through Almunia’s arms.
Our second 11 is just piss poor. Slow, complacent, lazy, blunt up front. We are utterly dependent on the first 11 all staying fit the rest of the season. Play the youth team in the replay, they won’t arrogantly assume they’ve won once one up.
How many times have we seen this? Wenger makes wholesale changes and it bites him on the arse – yet he continues to do it again and again and again!
Maybe next time Arsene will put a side out to win the game not another practice match, i would think the last thing Arsenal want now is to play extra games.
Shut up Jekyll you idiot. We are not relying on all 11 staying fit. Yes this lot all together don’t look great, but one at a time into the 1st team would not be a problem. I.e Ipswich at home was a mix of this lot and first team and we won 3-0. So what we have another game. Am sure we can cope. Stop moaning
Do not tell me how to respond, Jimbo. You can express your opinion and I can express mine. Name calling just makes you look childish.
I’ll have a moan if I see the same mistakes being made again and again.
Man I hate people b*tching and moaning about every damn draw Arsenal have and then they say its their opinion. Get behind the freaking team. Yes we drew. Ofcourse Wenger had to make 10 changes, they are playing 4 games in 10 days. Our second team is better than any second team in england. The pitch was not conducive to fluid passing, the orient players were really up for it and the arsenal “second strings” as you call it Jeykll don’t really get play often in the team hence it makes sense that they are low on confidence and not in tune with each other. We should have still beaten them. Fairplay to Orient players. Wenger should put out this same team at the emirates and they will roll orient over. I remember our second string rolling over newcastle and tottenham. This was as strong a team. Get behind players. Stop moaning
I agree we need to stop moaning & complaining. These idiots were calling for Wenger to be replaced just a few weeks ago. There is no other team in football in a better position both for this season and the future. The players & coaches benefit from our support not the constant moaning. If you don’t like the team go rout for someone else.
Any footballing watcher could see it coming. The second have we hadso muchcontrol but apart fro Arshaven nobody wantedto shoot. It would be interesting to see how many goals have been score thru teh Goalkeepers legs. Rememer two when he subbed in the ECup Final!!
Okay, this is an AKB site where you cannot criticise – understood, won’t be back.
Don’t take umbrage so easily Jekyll….you are entitled to express your views here just as anyone is entitled to respond in kind. I believe that out Arsenal B team is good enough but not cohesive enough. If we look at who is a regular starter on the first team and who started today we see:
Bacary Sagna
Alex Song
Andrey Arshavin
Nick Bendtner
We had 7 marginal or substitute players starting and we had the following on the bench:
Wojciech Szczesny
Cesc Fabregas
Laurent Koscielny
Samir Nasri
Jack Wilshere
Gael Clichy
Emmanuel Eboue
Wenger wanted to keep them fresh for what promises to be a rough, clogging game against Stoke on Wednesday and the CC on Sunday. He also wanted to see what Miguel can do and he did quite well for his first EPL game. We now have a 5th backup for the CB position and the more we can give kids like Miguel exposure to the EPL the better it is for the team, especially in that position.
Disappointing to have to play another game but it will give AW a chance to try new faces as well!
Jeykll, the people running this website are not the ones criticizing your comments. The Arsenal supporters are. You should try being one and support the team. Not find excuses to criticize the team and arsene every time we have a setback.
