Laurent Koscielny has given a honest reaction to the events at Upton Park on Saturday which saw Arsenal settle for a 3-3 draw.
According to the Frenchman who scored the Gunners’ equalizer with 20 minutes left to play, his teammates on the flanks – which includes the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Alex Iwobi and perhaps Mesut Ozil – did not produce enough defensive effort to help deal with West Ham’s threat of crosses.
“[Carroll] is quality when it comes to heading the ball,” Koscielny said. “If you want to win the duel, you need to be stronger and arrive early on the cross.
“You can’t let them get a cross in easy because they have some good players on the wings. It is a job for everyone, not just the defenders. The guys on the flanks need to help their team-mates with defending.”
West Ham Boss Slaven Bilic agreed with Koscielny’s opinion during his post-match interview, suggesting that Arsenal were not always organized when they lost possession of the ball.
“Sometimes their wingers don’t track back so we knew we would have space on the flanks,” he said.
“We hoped if we had space we could use it to put in good crosses. We have a few players who are capable, Dimitri [Payet], [Aaron] Cresswell, [Michail] Antonio, Mark Noble, and can bend the ball really well.
