The 7 teams Arsenal may face in round of 16
If there was a match Arsenal could afford to lose this season, it was today’s.
The slender defeat at Olympiacos was harsh on a spirited performance from an Arsenal side which set the record for the youngest line-up ever fielded in the competition.
Arsenal’s only loss was their unbeaten record in the Champions League this season but they head into the next stage of the tournament with much dignity after topping their group for the first time in three years.
Into the knock-out round, Wenger will be aware – as always – that top spot in Group H may not necessarily guarantee a fair task in the round of 16.
There are still big names in the bag and some mouth-watering clashes at the offing.
So here is a list of those left in the category of opponents Arsenal can be drawn against in the next round.
(Teams from the same country, group or with identical finishing positions in group stage cannot be drawn against each other)
Bayern Munich
CSKA Moscow
AC Milan
FC Porto
Lyon
Inter Milan
VfB Stuttgart
The Gunners have faced all seven teams before in history and remember, the official Champions League draw will take place next week Friday in Nyon.
So which of the above teams would you prefer Arsenal to come up against?
Stuttgart !! against Lehmann and Hleb 🙂 and not that tough
i think arsenal should get jason roberts from blackburn and lee casley from brimham they can solve our problems roberts doesnt miss chances and calsey is a good dm.
Clive you stole my thunder by taking my answer and posting like a minute before me…
But I agree, my number one choice would be Stuttgart. Not the sternest possible test and then there is the player history.
Whats the weather normally like in Moscow come February? They would be my second choice. I think most people would prefer Stuttgart.
we can win everyone if w e play good lets not say who we prefer cause when we had good draw we ve been knocked out ( like psv ) and when we had tough draws ( like real madrid , milan etc etc ( in round 16 we progressed 😉 im not scared of no one .. if you have to win the trophy youll beat any team !!! and we are capable !
Byern – would be good, hit or miss
Stut – would be great to rub it in Hlebs face
Moscow- would suck because of the weather
AC Milan – we’ve been there before and can do it again
Inter – would not want to play them, they are tough and Jose owns AW
Porto- they play well against us, would need to get an away goal
Lyon – the last team I would want to face.
Hopefully they draw Stutgard
I actually think that all teams are tuff, but beatable.
Lyon are much much weaker than the past seasons.
the two to avoid are Inter and Porto, although they can be beaten we could also lose.
I want Inter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No fear..bring it on! By Then we’ll probably have no players signed and most of the injured players back!
* I meant..By then we’ll probably have *new* players and most of the injured players back!
You were right anyway 😛
After watching the kids today, Wenger will feel he has enough depth in the squad to call on the reserves anytime…even in tense matches.
Randy, true! They played great. They pnly needed that goal. A draw would’ve been justified!
I don’t think you want either Milan team, or CSKA. All the others we can handle in a two-game set. I personally prefer Lyon, if only to convince Arsene that money would be well spent next summer on Hugo Lloris.
I just want to say that Ramsey is developing into an amazing player. He was by far the best player on the pitch for us today. I don’t see him not being an integral part of the squad by next season
Porto, porto, porto!
Ramsey was pretty good today, would like him to do the simple things more sometimes but besides that he was brill today,I used to be one of those who wud be wondering why Vela wasn’t gettn more starts in the lge but after seeing him over da past few wks I can see (again) dat Wenger’s decision making is justified he needs to keep learning der is still a lot of room for improvement same goes for Wilshere.Theo is really got me on the fence at the moment coz jus aint sure ap wat stage of development he is really at he jus possesses raw pace and imo nothing much else!!!
stuttgart or cska for me…..lyon and munich scare me…. milan not so much…..
Anyone liked kirrea gilbert i thought he was really good. was there all match attacking and defending.i think he will be awesome as a cover not so sure about tom cruise though….. he let to many crosses in……
Not Munich Please.
Bring on Moscow! We can thump them 3 or 4-0 at home easy.
And even if we lose 1-0 away. It don’t matter.
I think we would struggle against Bayern Munich & Inter.
I prefer a tough team like munich or milan
I want inter-milan so that my manager can keep morinho mute
Personally I’m good with whoever from that lot!!! Inter have been hit and miss this season, lyon and bayern ain’t the teams they were and the rest r easy meat… Whoever we play I can see us gettin at least a draw in the away leg and 2 or 3 goals at home but we must be more ruthless in front of goal than we’ve been in recent mind
Sorry, correction!!!! Lyon, bayern and AC Milan ain’t the teams they were
AC Milan. Arsenal will gun them down again at the San Siro!. This time it will be Cesc and Arshavin scoring 😀
I finally watched the game last night.
WOW, Alex Song is turning into a beast!!! He will be the next Essien. He just needs to shoot more.
Ramsey looked good, he’s only 18 and can develop into the Cesc role nicely.
Theo- what gives buddy. Looked like he was ashamed to be out there. Really hope we bring someone in January. The Boss has to know we need the help.
USA – where did you watch the game please?
It seems like despite the defeat, it’s a game people are only giving positive reactions on and could be a must watch. Tell me please!. (I missed it)
I watched in on FSC last night at 9pm. It said Stutgard but it was the Gunners game.
Some players looked good but a lot looked scared. Tom Cruise doesn’t look that good.
But if you look at it we are never going to field a team like that again. take the good from that team and mix it in with the 1st team and you might have something.
Ramsey will be good.
I agree with USA Gunner I thought our defense looked good with the exception of Cruise, he seemed lost, but I mean honestly who am I to talk when this kid is 18 and playing in a Champions League match for Arsenal
without Song and RAmsey I don’t think we would have looked as good as we did but still overall considering that the average age of the team was 20 and this game was one we could afford to lose then I think that plenty of positives can be taken
Vela needs to start scoring those chance but I have a feeling that a hot streak is coming his way where he’ll get goals in a few straight games
what a beautiful day:
Man City and Chelsea both draw
Tottenham and Man United both lose
loved it….its for us to capitalize….if we miss this golden opportunity then….
no preview???…….that’s disappointing randy…..it is a big game…….
LOL Usama, I stopped writing previews because I rarely get anyone to even give a comment on it. For some reason, for all articles I write, it’s the match previews which I hardly ever get feedback on (average is 2)
So I took that as no one really gave a sh*t about my Friday time I sacrifice. That’s a dissapointment because I usually put my best efforts in match previews – especially getting those facts and statistics.
But I have indeed noticed you’re someone who gives a crap about it. So I’ll do something about it man.
Cheers! 🙂 (Sorry though)
NO problem mate…..
