Three conclusions from today’s match
1. There is a reason why this clash was dubbed ‘men vs boys’
In all honesty, by half-time today, a neutral could compare this contest to that of a toddler trying to get a toy back from his father. The little boy constantly beats his Dad but never gets the toy and when he finally tires and stops, his father only has to give him one tap on the cheek and he will start crying.
That is not necessarily the difference in ability between United and Arsenal, but just like against Chelsea, Arsenal began the game more than the energetic side. The tempo was so high that even with just 10 minutes on the clock, free-kicks and goal-kicks were quickly taken like we were in injury time.
Arshavin was at the sprints while Fabregas and co breezed forward. Gallas and Clichy were making one-touch clearances – not to waste too much time in defending and set up attack fast.
They were that enthusiastic.
It was inevitable that the up-and-down running had taken a lot of energy, and by the half-hour mark, you could sense Arsenal were beginning to look a bit leggy. That was the spell in which United bossed and as we sat back to defend, they always had a way to find the break-through. 33 minutes on, Nani rolls past two men and bam!
We had to recharge the batteries again and get back into the game, but Rooney’s sucker-punch sure did not help it.
2. We were NOT playing 4-3-3 but 4-6-0 today
Arsenal’s problem is not a big man in defense, not a big man in midfield, but a big man in attack.
All slick, skillful attackers play off headed balls from tall strikers who partner them upfront. We were witnesses to what Arshavin is capable of when deployed on the left wing today. But seeing him play in that position meant no one played through the middle for Arsenal.
That meant typical midfielders like Nasri and Rosicky were forced to be Arsenal’s front men and when the Russian – who did prove a bit selfish sometimes – occasionally made those mesmerizing runs on the left, he only had two choices which were to either cross to dwarfs or simply go for goal himself. Clichy and Sagna – who seem shy to enter the box and often send deep crosses from the flanks – were simply swinging at the ball in vain.
And ask yourself; why do Gallas and Vermaelen occasionally charge forward? It is because of the lack of physical presence we have upfront and if there was a gangly striker leading the attack, there would have been little need of those contributions our center-backs were trying to make. That said, they would never be caught out of position when the opposition counter-attacks.
The fact that Song was fancying chances from 12 yards out tells you how many people who were bold enough to get into the penalty box and test Van der Sar.
The strength to untie the knot is missing.
3. Substitutions went wrong
Considering what I have pointed out above, Nicklas Bendtner was the only man Arsenal could turn to. But it took going down 0-3 with 18 minutes to go for him to be introduced. The fact that he was omitted from the starting line-up in the first place was rueful. And perhaps that was a reasonable move by the manager due to fitness concerns, but Wenger’s first substitution after 60 minutes should have been Bendtner and not Walcott.
Walcott only has pace and carpet footballing to offer. Those were traits we already had in Arshavin, Rosicky, Nasri and Fabregas. Thus, we were still lacking the Plan B of physicality or aerial threat and when Bendtner came on – despite looking less fit than a butcher dog – his presence was noticeable.
Even though the Dane did not grab the consolation goal or spur any unlikely comeback, it was his presence in the box which helped disrupt the United defense into sixes and sevens for Vermaelen’s strike to go in.
OTHER CONCERNS (other than Almunia and Denilson)
Thomas Vermaelen and perhaps Song seemed like the only MEN with hearts today. There were dropping heads everywhere on the pitch and the Belgian not only came up with vital interventions which denied an even more embarrassing final score but gave us something to cheer about.
Clichy is looking no different from Traore game to game. He is constantly bullied by both pace – which he already has – and strength.
Ashley Young, Nani and who’s next? Joe Cole? Anelka?
With the transfer window nearly shut, this is a tough nut to crack. But in times like this, you can only hope and look forward to what follows.
And that will be Stamford Bridge.
well said mate…..lets beat up almunia!!!!!
Boy what would I give for Dzeco and Bufon now (sorry about the spelling).
the only man today with any credibility was gallas!!
terrible performance by the arsenal today – we embarrassed ourselves. only fabregas played like a man committed to the cause. they don’t care enough – we’ve got a more talented squad than united but they have far far more desire. and that’s the difference – always will be unless some kind of coaching revolution happens behind the scenes.
you are so far wide of the mark its incredible there are two reasons why we lost:
1. arshavin needs to be dropped he no team player, has his own agenda and today he could have pu nasri through 4 times and cesc through on three occasions for what would have been deffinate goals hes too greedy and thinks only about himself and how good he looks at the detriment of the team the game should have been out of reach of man u in the firs 15mins if it wasnt for our greedy little russian he needs to be rested
2. Denilson he has no awareness, pace and positional knowledge all he knows to do is make the easiest pass possible. he was at fault for the second goal because he was watching the ball not the rampaging rooney flying into space behind him and the amount of times he gave or lost the ball was unbelievable what a waste when rambo was sitting on the bench
team overhaul please no more intricate midgets please.
I got an idea – lets give Portsmouth Theo Walcott and Denilson for free….they could do with the players and perhaps they may come good with less pressure on them and the Arse would beneift as it would reduce our midget deficit by 2.
Denilson that piece of shit does fck all! who ever said he was ever gud dnt knw wat english football is abt! wish i cud earn thousands a wk jus joging on da pitch n passing sideways or nt bothern to put a half decent tackle. Fck this shit.
My question is – Theo Walcott, second half, left hand side, crosses the ball like its the first time he ever did it. WTF do they do in training all week??? Not good enough, damn it I could have done better!
denilson = pussy
almunia = pussy
nasri = pussy
clichy = pussy
walcott = pussy
sagna = mediocre
arshavin = fed up with having the piss taken out of him by wenger’s absurd tactics
cesc = trying his best but getting no support from certain teammates or his manager
wenger = out-though, out-managed, betrayed by some of these pussy players he insists on putting on the pitch.
“I do not need a striker because I ‘ave ze Bendtner coming back and there is no player better zan ‘im in ze market”
Give me a fucking break…I’m sick of hearing there are no players better than almunia, denilson, walcott or nasri out there. That’s taking the fans for morons. This squad is getting very stale and needs a little turnover before we lose proper players like Cesc, Song, Vermaelen and Arshavin.
well said eddie
denilson!! denilson!! he is the biggest pile of monkey shit i’ve seen wearing an arsenal shirt in long time. as for clichey……he’s lost it big time. every time i see him play , he looks well out of his depth. COME BACK KIERAN!! i love arsenal…always will do, but i’m growing more and more frustrated with team. we had a great oppertunity to beat a weakend man utd team (@home) and we lost..???
Denilson should be flocked ASAP; Almunia – that clown – should be released – no team will ever pay a dollar for him; Walcott sent to the reserves to start doing something else but run like headless chicken. We need last minute urgent buys – Dzeko, Flamini and a decent goalie.
When van persie went down and bendtner got injured, the only logical option was to buy in the tranfser window. (Not to mention we never replaced adebayor, which no one seems to mention?)
Aside from denilson being awful and clichy obviously not fit, we didn’t play that badly.
We simply don’t have enough of a threat up front which causes the opposition to feel they dont need to defend deep and are eager to hit us on the break. That what happened today.
For wenger not to buy a central striker is inexcusable, as are his excuses for not getting one.
We had been lucky to be in the race for the title this late on and by not buying we now have no chance of winning anything.
JAMES says drop Arshavin!! That’s the most unbelievably stupid comment I’ve read on a blog in weeks. Some gooners truly are morons.
We got thrashed again by Man u for 1 reason only – because we have a Manager who is the biggest tight-ass in the market and consistenly refuses to buy the striker and defensive midfielder we needed to win this kind of game. Blame Wenger, not Arshavin.
sorry mate, but have to disagree with part of what you wrote here.
agree – dropping AA would be crininaly stupid. yes, he didn’t put nasri or walcot thru a couple time.
my russian mates tell me he is not naturally a striker, but attacking mid who lies behind the striker. he’s basically playing out of position.
but blaming AW (your “only 1 reason”) is crazy. we were trashed because our defense decided not to show up. Song had a good game, but that yellow card he got early (nani is such a little cunt) means he had to throttle back a bit, lest he get another and sent off. Song is a solid holding mid. to deny that would show your willful blindness.
the team needs a striker. RVP is the man, when he’s fit. bendnter is simply not up to the job.
we need a real keeper. that is the difference. individually, our back line is solid. i’ll take sagna, vermy, gallas and clichy over any back four in the prem. but here’s the thing: why to they leak goals and perform dismally on set pieces? i say its almunia who is the weak link. he lacks their respect. he lacks the ability to organize the defense, like a field marshall.
boy … that’s a long post. apologies all.
keep the faith gunners!
i cant take the disappointments we have had to face in last 5 years time for change
the first substitution should of been denilson off after 10 minutes, and any manager who is capable of reading the game from the dugout would of made that decision
I agree that the performance today was very dissappionting, and everyone, including AW must share the blame. But what has been overlooked,is the fact that today, like the Champions League game last season, Manu were more confident, sharp, efficient than us,and outplayed us in every department. It hurts, and i am in pain at the moment.I am no psychiatrist, but i suspect that perhaps the players get themselves so worked up for these big games, that they become overanxious and let their nerves get the better of them. They certainly did not look like the team some of us know they are capable of being. And of course, after such a performance there will be the expected post mortems, and the calls for heads to roll or reinforcements and or replacements to be made.Well,i have news for you all, none of the aforesaid is going to happen anytime soon. So,if we are true supporters of the team,we might as well face the facts, and get behind the team in one of their darkest moments.I am no fan of Liverpool, but i have great admiration for their supporters, they never allow their team to walk alone.Let’s do the same for our team. They have been written off before, and have come back to be still in there with a chance, maybe they can do it again.
couldnt have said it better myself ardent……it is so pathetic to read some of these comments from so called gunners…..keep the faith bruv
Seriously,
You guys are trying to say Arsenal to win every single game.
Yes, we lost to Chelsea and Man Utd. but so what?
If Man Utd was beaten yesterday, these bad conclusions wouldn’t be here.
How bad was Arshavin will not be mentioned if Arsenal wins.
How bad was Alumnia will be mentioned if Arsenal LOSE OR WIN.
That’s the difference.
I hate what I’m about so write and say but I feel that it has to be said.
I can’t stand it anymore! I know I’m here saying we need to respect the team win or lose but today I did something that I’ve never done before, I turned it off at half and didn’t watch the 2nd half. THey were a bunch of pussies, little kids who couldn’t hold the jock sweat of the Man u Men. I love Arsenal to death but honestly COME ON! Show some fucking heart and play with some balls.
I know I bash the anti Gunners here but I’m starting to be one, Wegner you can’t sit back and think that team is going to win you anything!! YOU HAVE TO BUY, and hopefully he has a cat in his hat and went right to the phone after that game to buy someone.
I can’t stand it, we are going to get crushed by Chelsea, maybe tie Pool and then get some sort of major injury and then heartbreak again in the Semi Finals of the CL.
From what I watched today anyone could have beaten us. And it proved to me that Almunia is done. Give the nod back to Vito and let him get some time in the posts.
I know I’m going to get a lot of shit for this but I can’t take it anymore. i remember last year when I boycotted the team and postings and we went on a terror so hopefully I’ll ba back soon but don’t count on it with the way we are playing.
You have three forwards out for the year and you still don’t buy anyone? Come on?? WTF!
disgusting comment & past actions from a fair weather gunner
i cant blv iam saying this we missed Diaby insted of playing Denilson the new Diaby does every thing shoots goes foward dribles wen needed tall and strong i hope hes bck for the chavs game. today i blame the boss he got the tacticse wrong ramsey was even a bter option than theo
Funny how i never heard supporters calling for the head of Sir.Alex when Manu were beaten by Burnley or Fulham, etc.
once again…couldnt have said it any better myself…..i even think chelski supporters show more faith &respect in their clubs merry go round of gaffers than we show in ours even though he is a proven winner with a huge part in our glorious history & a huge part in our very very bright future…..and he has done/will do it all with the clubs success/stability in mind….keep the faith my true gooners
what happened to campbell is he hurt if so how long and arsenal should of got cole from westham or should recall jaysimspon from qpr he can play in the epl
GREAT article mate, agree with it all. Man arshavin was confusing today, probably the first match he put effort into and yet was probably one of his worst matches?? to say we played with no strikers today till bendy came on shows our porblem is upfront, no matter what we think of him Ade is slightly missed, he might be a cunt but the footballer ade is missed
Cheers mate!
Yep I agree about Ade, and if anyone saw his goal for City today, they would come back here ruing his exit. (A cunt they say, but somehow missed not because he was so good or influential a player, but he was never replaced)
The conclusion I drew from the Chelsea battering is that we lacked any physicality in the final third. I was made to draw the same exact conclusion today.
That said, as long as Wenger doesn’t keep a fit-again Diaby and Bendtner on the bench next week, we won’t go into half-time 2-0 or more down after all the football.
I hate being negative but I really feel enough is enough. The board are lying their holes off. They have made an idiot out of our manager who reputation is being tarnished by the lack of funds he is given. Promised a big cash cow with the Highbury square project due to materialise last summer, he’s now being given sweet f a due to the property market tumble. However, the likes of Dein and the Carr family have received money beyond their wildest dreams for selling shares in our club. Give the man the money to buy David Villa and of course a bloody keeper. How much longer do we have to put up with a reserve team keeper cause he’s cheap. Disgusted Gooner!
I can feel the frustration from some fans, but the fact of the matter is that there are no top quality players readily available, unless of course you are willing to pay ridiculous prices like the amounts paid for Critiano Ronaldo,Kaka,Benzema,Robinho, etc. The clubs need their top quality players in their own teams, and are not going to do Arsenal any favours. And then again, there is no guarantee that buying will make any difference.I have seen quite a lot of flops in my time.
All too late for this year, but the issue ahead is what do we do next season, assuming Cesch stays. I dont think we’ll know whether Walcott is really a waste of space till we see him get a run in a successful Arsenal team ,simarly Nasri. With the likes of Denilson and Vela I think we need to cut our losses and make space for Ramsey and Wishire. There’s abig issue on goalkeeper. the boy at Brentford sounds promising but we cant wait a couple of years. Why we didn’t buy Given for 4£m quid I’ll never know.. Wenger needs to buy someone like Buffon short term and damn the cost. And then there’s the strikers- I love Van Persie but his injury record speaks for itself.Too many people are sentimental about Eduardo. He looks shot through, and even if he recovers somewhat, he’s not got the physicality for 4-3-3. Bendtner will get better but you cant bet next season on him so Wenger has to spend and if that means losing some of his much loved project so be it.
In an ideal world, at 17.50 AW was on the phone to Milan telling Huntelaar to get his arse on the first available flight to London. At 17.51 a call was placed to Turin telling Buffon the same.
The reality though was he was in the dressing room telling Denilson that he’s the world’s greatest defensive midfielder.
I am an avid supporter of the Gunners but have never written on posts like this before. While he must be congratulated for establishing a economically viable model for the club I lost patience with AW some time ago.
AW’s biggest problem is that he holds on to poor player selections for too long. He wants to try and prove that he has not made mistakes with purchases, however long that may take! The other problem is that AW is not feared by the players (al la Fergie). It is as though his entire mentality is centered around achieving top four in the PL in order to qualify for CL each year.
You all have a go at the players, quite rightly, but miss the crucial nexus. Dont forget, AW and his staff have chosen these players.
Someone like Fergie would have relinquished MA,GC, D, TW and NB years ago. One more comment, have you noticed the impact Eduardo has when he is brought on. I admit he misses many chances but we do tend to score goals in his presence. His speed will improve with time.
Why is it that our seasons tend to derail at this time of the year
A (once again), disheartened gooner.
Wenger will never listen to fans proposal that the team need a striker. He has made Arsenal to falter because of his antics. A clean takeover of the club should be made and Usmanov is the guy that can save Arsenal.
did you notice that alex ferguson came with a game plan right from the start. his boys kept directing the ball at clichy’s area. what does it mean?
Unfortunate defeat. Man U were thrashed something in the region of 4-1 by Liverpool and I dont think the man u fans said the tema is not good enough. Man U will be thrashed by the same score by Chelsea if they play the way they did yesterday. The difference was that Man U took there chances and arsenal didnt. Its simple as that.
Wah my eyes almost bled reading all this hate and defending comments. But I seriously wasn’t surprise that Arsenal will lose the moment i saw Denilson on the pitch even though i knew he was gonna play. Denilson just cant play againt big club, he’s screwing up over and over again, he’s anxious, he’s touch’s as good as mine, and 10 hours before the game i told my friend if Denilson starts and Fletcher was in the game, Man United will win. FLETCHER PWNS DENILSON!!
i can play better than denilson.. i think better we swap denilson with anderson of man u…. big gap and qualities
Yes we can beat the likes of Bolton,Portsmouth with no Clasical striker but we it comes to big games we suck , and that is sadly a fact.
we play with too many midfielders, and NO way we play in a 4-3-3 formation, it is a 4-6-0 .
I hoped for Adriano to come to us in this January window but it could only be realized in my dreams.
A team with no World class striker available can not hope to win the Tittle. I would release Almunia cos he is shit, Denilson cos he will never be a good player an Bendtner he is the worst off all, not to mention Chlichy he is past his……
4 years ago,I wrote to Arsenal telling them to get rid of Almunia & Sendsros. It’s unbelievable they are still here.
What I did 2 seasons ago,I have not buy any products from Arsenal.Wenger always says he has the money to spend but he hasn’t get any world class players. Then why should I spend money on Arsenal? I think fans should not buy any more tickets especially playing at the Emirates.Let Wenger see all the empty seats or he never know we are pissed off. I hate seeing Arsenal losing to chelskis and mu. If I have a chance to see Almunia & Senderos,I’ll spit on their fucking face.
We need a keeper, a holding midfielder and a quality striker.
I’m sure even the Arsenal board can see this, and it must be within the tight budget we have for spending on players.
Its going to be a busy summer with the world cup etc, just hope we can get some new recruits in Before the world cup starts.
simon, i’m not trying to give you a hard time and nothing personal. fair comments by you. apologies, sir, if i was over the top.
agree with many here: when united lose, its supporters say, “we played like shit”; or “you ran us off the ground today”. no one calls for SAF’s head. its a shame all the knee-jerk, FIFA pseudo-fan/fantasy managers are so quick to hire/fire. in the real world, its not such a good idea.
i fear chavski will do to us what they did last time: jam up the middle of the park and make us go around. or force our little forwards thru the middle. and bendtner, he’s just not getting it done (yet). and then they will hit us on the break.
let’s hope the squad gets the fire back in time to show and play next weekend.
heads up men!
this article is simply brilliant!
look guys or GOONERs…. lets face it how much we write here it wont make a difference to the team playing out there…lets be logical…we have to be behind wenger …i cant beleive im saying this…..lets just support the team and hope that we win a trophy this season…cmon guys..its no use moaning over lost cause…at the end of the day arsene calls the cards not us…
i miss hleb and flamini .never thought i would
