Arsene Wenger has spoken about the future of Alexis Sanchez following rumours which have suggested that the forward could join Chelsea this summer.
Sanchez is currently the team’s top scorer with 22 goals in all competitions, but his reluctance to sign a new contract has prompted strong speculation about an exit.
The Chilean international said earlier this week that he would be happy to remain in London with a team which is fighting for the Premier League title.
That statement from Sanchez has been deemed by some as a come-and-get-me plea to Chelsea, but Wenger insists his star forward’s words were taken out of context.
“I think personally he’s happy here. It’s true that we have not extended his contract yet,” the Arsenal manager said on Thursday
“I hope that he will stay at the club but overall I think you have as well to be very cautious when people give interviews in their home countries.
“As you said, the interpretation is not always exactly what they wanted to say. I don’t see anything in that – he said he wants to win the championship, that’s what everybody wants. I can understand that completely.”
