The manager appeared to be pulling the strings on the sidelines and Song was the most likely man to come off as the Gunners chased an equalizer, but Wenger’s patience paid off dividends.

Incidentally, it was the combative Cameroonian who had the biggest hand in the goal that pulled Arsenal level.

Despite appearing in an offside position, Song managed to provide an assist for Vermaelen who poked home.

And Wenger revealed in his post-match interview that Song’s massive impact might have been undone by an attacking substitution he attempted to make.

“I wanted to put one more offensive player on and take Song off. When I saw we had a free kick I did not do it because I know Song can be dangerous on free kicks. Then after we scored, I did not make the substitution.” Wenger said.
