Arsenal have been linked with a surprise move for a rival club’s player, only days into the January transfer window.
Arsene Wenger strengthened his defensive department during the summer by securing the signings of Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi.
However, the fact that Per Mertesacker is unlikely to extend his contract at the club means Arsenal will lose the German’s services for free at the end of the season.
And with regards to filling the void left by Mertesacker, Wenger is reportedly planning on a move for Manchester United star Chris Smalling.
According to the Daily Star, United will be willing to sell the England international if they manage to secure the signing of Victor Lindelof.
Thus, Wenger, who last did business with Jose Mourinho in the summer 2015 as Petr Cech moved from Chelsea to Arsenal, is ready to make an audacious attempt to recruit Smalling whom he pursued during his days at Fulham.
