Arsene Wenger has revealed the reason why he has refused to pursue the signing of Dimitri Payet in the past.
The 29-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Premier League after being signed by West Ham last summer.
Payet continued his sublime form with a brilliant goal as France beat Romania 2-1 on the opening day of Euro 216, prompting questions over why he has not secured a move to a bigger club.
According to Wenger, who has admitted to being interested in the midfielder, he previously turned down the opportunity to sign Payet due to his lack of consistency.
“Yes [I’ve considered him for Arsenal] often. Very often, I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career” Wenger said.
“And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.
“I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded!”
